The summer of Covid is upon us.

[Side Note: Please, please, please let there only be one social-distance summer mostly spent at home.]

I know everyone has a different opinion on things, especially in BC where our Covid rates are low and things are starting to open back up again. But this summer is feeling a bit restricted, trapped. And I long to just get away, go somewhere and leave home life behind for a bit. A vacation, I think they’re called?

But where do we go? It was only in the last month or so that shops and restaurants have been opening up more and we are being encouraged to socialize. At a distance, of course. By the time we decided it might be safe to go somewhere, do something, go camping, maybe? It’s too late. Everything is booked, full, reserved.

Not to mention, I don’t think it’s a good idea to take a child with the nickname “Maniac Maverick” well, anywhere, really. Especially somewhere with no deadbolts or doors we can close and lock. Or a fence. Or a straightjacket … I think I’ve made that joke before. I’ll move on.

So, if we’re staying home, what do we do?

Especially if summer doesn’t get the memo that it’s supposed to be sunny and hot outside. Because if it were sunny and hot outside, we could at least get out the kiddie pool and let the kids run through the sprinkler and play with the water table!

My question to you, what are you going to do this summer?

Are you a camper lucky enough to get a reservation when you want to go camping?

How about local travel? I’ve been wanting to expand our travel around this lovely province of ours, but I am not partial to travelling on BC Ferries at the moment, and the number one spot I wanted to go is Tofino, on Vancouver Island!

That’s out for us.

What else is there?

The Lower Mainland is always relatively busy at summer hot spots, camping, beaches and pools. Is this really the time to try and brave the masses and attempt to social distance at a place where even parking is usually at capacity by 9am on a Saturday?

Family on Bikes

Bikes!

I know that the kids are happy with extra movie-time (like right now) while I get a few things done. And they’re even happier to just play, splash and be outside. I just don’t want our summer to be a repeat of the same thing over and over, and I’m also no Pinterest mom. One silver lining for our family is that we picked up some bikes a few weeks ago, so there’s at least those to keep us somewhat busy and active.

Perhaps the summer of Covid will be a time to embrace the slower pace and not worry too much about what we’re going to do, or where we’re going to go.

But, still, I’d like to hear what you’re planning for the summer!

Sitting still,

Anya
